Recent history of 1-71 (2000s-Present)

In March 2004, the 1st Squadron, 71st Cavalry Regiment was activated with newly assigned personnel and existing units from within the division. Approximately eleven months following its activation, the 1st Squadron, 71st Cavalry (1-71 CAV) deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom IV in 2005. During this period, the squadron conducted combat operations throughout Area of Operations (AO) Cobra in western Baghdad. Its primary mission was to serve as a Military Transition Team (MiTT), partnering with the 1st Brigade, 6th Division of the Iraqi Army.

In late February and extending through much of May, the squadron executed a surge operation in response to the attack on the Samara Mosque. This involved intensive 24-hour patrols within AO Cobra, demonstrating support for the Iraqi populace and the Iraqi Security Forces, which contributed to the de-escalation of sectarian tensions during a volatile period. By the beginning of April, the squadron transitioned from the MiTT mission and was assigned a new AO, designated AO Ghost, situated on the western periphery of Baghdad. AO Ghost encompassed the strategically significant Abu Ghraib compound and an 18-kilometer stretch of the corps Main Supply Route (MSR). This new operational environment presented a contrast to the urban setting of AO Cobra, requiring the soldiers of 1-71 CAV to adapt to the expansive rural terrain over a six-month period. In July 2006, 1-71 CAV redeployed to Fort Drum and then redeployed in August 2007 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom with 1BCT, during the "Surge" for a 15-month rotation. The unit returned in November 2008.

On July 26 2024 the 3rd Squadron, 71st Cavalry Regiment was inactivated at Fort Drum.
